Language Ban System: One Year Later

It’s been just over a year since we first introduced the Language Ban system to Rocket League, which means: Happy Belated Birthday, ‘Thor.’ (And yes, that IS what we call it internally!)

In celebration of that birthday, we thought it useful to share some quick stats regarding how the system limits toxicity and player harassment on an ongoing basis. That means that since activating the system on August 2, 2017, ‘Thor’ has...
  • Levied over 520,000 bans on more than 283,000 accounts
  • Of these accounts, 66% were banned once, and 34% were banned multiple times (including both Game and Chat Bans)
  • 94.4% of players banned once have returned to online play after the ban was served
  • 66% of all bans are Game Bans; 34% are Chat Bans, which were introduced earlier this year
  • All of the bans back-to-back accumulate to over 2,700 years, 142,000 weeks, or more than 86,210,000,000 seconds
We’re still working on evolving this system as we strive to keep Rocket League a fun, all-ages-friendly environment. That will include adding real-time language filtering that we believe will make an appearance later this year. We'll keep you updated when we have more to share!

I've seen people post the fact that they can still use their names to create inappropriate language.
Will there ever be an option to mask other people's steam/console names from P*55Y to Opponent1/2/3/4 or Teammate 1/2/3 for instance?

This might get sorted out with the cross party system as just like fortnight you will then need to have some sort of Rocket league ID instead of Steam ID which Psyonix will then have a say over. As it stands Psyonix has no control over steam names and steams policy allows pretty much anything so technically they can't really ban it but you can report them to steam instead. Once the system uses Psyonix system for names then I'm sure people will be able to get banned for in appropriate names

That’s why they could (idk if its possible but i dont see why not) implement a feature which masks the names ingame for “teammate1” “teammate2” etc

I've noticed that calling people "autists" and generally using "autism" as a slur seems to be gaining popularity among the RL community and one that doesn't seem to be getting picked up by the language ban system - while I understand that for some people this might seem to be 'not as bad' as racist or homophobic slurs, I guess I wonder why we need to tolerate ANY slurs while playing a game-rated ESRB E / PEGI 3?

On that note, and maybe this will be considered off-topic and I'm sure I've seen it mentioned elsewhere but I feel it's relevant / bears repeating:
If you won't let us block/avoid specific players, could you PLEASE not match us up together immediately after we've reported them for "Verbal Text Harassment"? I don't want to play with (or be seen to be playing with) racists / homophobes / bigots in general, but it seems I'm all too often immediately placed back on a team with someone whom I just reported in the previous game. Even if you ultimately decide that their behavior doesn't warrant a ban, I still don't want to play with them - last night I was placed with someone who was obviously trying to be as offensive as possible, bragging about child abuse etc three times in a row, and then for a fourth time after one game apart. Of course, this seemed to delight them, but left me feeling like the only way to avoid being asked to play alongside someone spewing such disgusting things was to simply not play at all, which hardly seems fair. I'd happily wait a little longer to match-make (I regularly wait 15 minutes just for people to ff in the first minute - so I'd happily wait longer still to avoid someone spewing such vile vitriol).
